The Trial Consulting division of Capital Novus, a global e-Discovery, Data Forensics, and Trial Graphics company, is currently offering CLE classes to law firms across the country, free of charge. The company’s most recent CLE delves into the effective methods of creating and presenting informative and compelling demonstratives to persuasively teach science and other technical subjects to juries in patent and commercial cases.
Since jurors are more likely to believe what they can easily understand, it is essential for attorneys to prepare a cohesive and coherent presentation to educate the jury on the underlying evidence and complicated technical concepts of their case in order to prevail at trial. The challenge that sets the premise for the CLE is the fact that much of the technology and concepts revealed during a case are often difficult to grasp without previous knowledge of the topic at hand. This challenge is addressed and followed up with a solution. Attendees of the CLE will learn techniques to effectively communicate even the most impenetrable technical subject matter to judges and juries alike. The 1-hour presentation covers a variety of topics including creative ways to build a compelling narrative, incorporating expert testimony into the overall themes of the case, and the effective use of information design.
The presentation is based on an in-depth article entitled “Understanding is Believing: Teaching Science to Juries” which was written by experienced litigator and Vice President of Novus Trial Consulting, April Tishler, who also presents the CLE. The course has recently been held in New York, the Midwest region, and throughout the Washington, DC area, and has been received with great praise from all attendees. Capital Novus’ CLE program has been accredited in Virginia, New York, Ohio, and Delaware.
